(HIT)-Home remodelers and do-it-yourselfers spend more than $200 billion annually on residential remodeling, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and many overlooked a room's most important feature -- the interior door.
Serving as the entry to a room and conveying its initial impression, doors play an integral role in home décor and should be considered along with any home improvement or remodeling project. Walk around your home and look at the interior doors, even your closet's bi-folds. You may not notice much style, but that's something you can change this weekend by visiting a local home center or lumberyard and selecting new doors with raised-panel designs that complement your interior decor.
Installing new raised-panel doors throughout your home is inexpensive compared to many home renovations or decorating projects. For example, small chairs and bedside tables alone can cost up to $1,000 or more.

The average home has 19 interior passage doors. Replacing every one with a new hollow core door made with CraftMaster® Doors costs less than a new chair and ottoman. Replacing each door with a new solid core door costs less than a new sofa and chair.
While wood doors were popular in homes built during the '50s and '60s, engineered wood has become the standard for which doors are manufactured today. Raised-panel door designs are very popular among homeowners who have come to realize doors provide excellent decorative appeal, minus the cost and maintenance of solid wood.
A recent research study by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) shows that a sizeable majority of homeowners plan to remain in their current homes as they age, in order to stay near family, friends and community. Remodeling, therefore, is one of the best ways to improve a home's value.
"Consumers want a house that reflects their personal style. They're looking for fine details, individual expressions and ways to make their home stand out," says Sharon Hanby-Robie, interior designer and ASID member, Lancaster, Penn.
"Raised-panel doors provide exactly that -- attention to detail, definition of space and a variety of designs, finishes and sizes to match any home décor," Robie adds.

CraftMaster Doors, the number one brand of interior door facings in the world, are manufactured into finished doors by CMI and other door manufacturers worldwide. Designs range from two, three, four and six panels, and many are available in either a textured wood grain or smooth finish. For do-it-yourselfers, the most important feature is that they are easy to install and offer immediate design results. Also, they are readily available at many national home centers.
Installing a new door is a quick, easy weekend project, and the results are dramatic. The door and a few basic carpentry tools are all you need to change the entire complexion of your home.
Many homeowners often keep the existing frame and simply replace the doors, called slabs, themselves. For a fresh new look, you can purchase a pre-hung door and replace the frame. In this case, you should heed a few installation tips:
- Ensure the pre-hung door is squarely in the frame, then lock it in position with a cross brace.
- Use wood shims between the jambs and the studs, as necessary, to ensure a plumb, square and proper fit.
- Keep the frame flush with proper positioning of the cross brace.
- Add trim by cutting, gluing and nailing it in place after the door has been installed.

With so many styles, finishes and sizes, doors made with CraftMaster designs offer you the chance to showcase your home's true character.
For example, the CraftMaster Carrara® Door features a two-panel, square top, smooth surface that complements virtually any home décor. Blending traditional and contemporary elements, the clean lines and panel clarity of the Carrara design appeals to a wide range of tastes and preferences. It is available in standard (6 feet, 8 inches) as well as 7-and 8-foot heights.
Other raised-panel door designs include the four-panel, Coventry®, available in standard and 8-foot heights. With its simple, linear face and smooth surface finish, it adds a handsome, stately look to every room.
If you have high ceilings, 8-foot-tall doors are available in smooth or textured finishes and in a variety of raised-panel designs.
Many CraftMaster door designs are available in both hollow core and solid core construction. You can purchase all designs in the line primed and ready for painting.
And, unlike their solid wood counterparts, CraftMaster door designs resist swelling, shrinking and splitting. In the case of painted doors, this prevents cracks in the paint film and avoids adding one more project to your to-do lists.
